What to look for when hiring a web designer

If you’re ready for a new website (or your current one needs a refresh), choosing the right designer is the first step. Here’s what I recommend looking for:

1. A portfolio that fits your style
Every designer has their own look. Take time to browse their work — you should see clean, functional sites that match the kind of image you want for your business.

2. Clear communication
You’ll want someone who explains things in plain language, keeps you updated, and sticks to timelines. Building a site should feel organized, not confusing.

3. More than just design
A great website isn’t just about visuals. Copywriting, SEO, and post-launch support matter just as much. Make sure your designer handles those details or can guide you through them.

4. Platform knowledge
If your site is on Squarespace (my specialty), WordPress, or another platform, make sure your designer knows it inside and out — it’ll save you time and headaches later.

5. A good working fit
Web design is collaborative. You’ll be sharing ideas, goals, and feedback — so it helps to work with someone who listens and genuinely wants your site to succeed.

A website is an investment in your business. The right designer will treat it that way — with care, communication, and attention to detail.
